Ah, then you must have posted your question just after I had loaded the Changes page, because then the page where several days old. Funny coincidence. I was going to write here that I will abandon this gun. But your observation made me rethink. No I am rethinking again maybe. This gun might not have something to offer compared to the best PM guns out there anyway. -- PEZ

A silly PatternMatching gun by PEZ

(See ResinRRGC for a download link).

The idea behind this gun is simple (but maybe not worth it anyway...). Resin fires a Wave every tick and for each tick it takes for the wave to hit the enemy it records a pattern (at the moment the pattern is built from heading-delta and velocity). When the wave reaches the enemy the GuessFactor that would have hit is stored in the wave. The accumulated pattern and its corresponding pattern is saved in a pattern buffer. This buffer is then searched before shooting and if there's a match the guess factor is retrieved and the gun aimed.

Problem is this gun can't even hit SpinBot reliably... Maybe someone curious will look at the code and see if the whole idea is crap or if there's a bug in the implementation. Here's the code for version 0.3:

The code is uncommented as always with me. But at least it's small. =) The only thing slightly tricky is that I use an array of HashMaps as pattern buffers. The maps are indexed with the pattern (a String) and the objects stored are the waves themselves. (Consumes loads of memory, yes, but I won't optimize stuff like that until I see that the gun is actually working.) The array of maps is indexed with the pattern length. This way map lookups can be made on sub patterns. Resin always tries to find a pattern matching the full current wave first but then starts matching shorter and shorter patterns.

Well, the gun is crap at its current. Any help or comments is truly appreciated.

-- PEZ

OK, so I have found a major bug now. Anyone about to give me some help might want to wait a little while until I publish a version where this bug is nailed. (The bug is about me shrinking the pattern to be matched from the wrong end.) -- PEZ

Now the bug should be fixed. I also changed things so the pattern includes the sign of where the enemy is going lateraly and advancing. Did this to hit SpinBot better, but that didn't help. This gun still can't hit SpinBot reliably! Also added visit counts for the guess factors. Making the gun work like a simple statistical gun when there are short pattern matches. -- PEZ

Hmmm, I think I have found out where this gun fails. It's fundamental. I try to match against the patterns of while the bullet is in the air... I must of course match against the patterns before the bullets are fired! Is there a punishment connected to being too stupid? -- PEZ

Yes, your guns can't hit SpinBot. But seriously, I was about to say what you did - when I attempted a gun of this style, I found the pattern and used the projection from BFT ticks *later* as my bearing. Or something like that. -- Kawigi

Well, that's about what I did before fixing that first bug. =) -- PEZ

Now I've tried to match the guess_factor <=> pattern pairs such that the pattern before the wave was shot is paired with the guess factor that should have hit. Now I hit SpinBot a bit better, but I still miss loads of shots... -- PEZ

The gun works fine against spinbot if you disable ResinRRGC's movement; are you recording the opponent's displacement relative to your bot? --Dummy

Hmm, I haven't noticed your observation and question until now Dummy. I had no idea it performed better against SpinBot if I disabled movement... However, Resin's TargetingChallenge score is far from good. I don't think any of my measures are really relative to my bot. Well, two of them are by definition but it's still formulas that should work if I am moving... I could be wrong though, I haven't really wrapped my mind around those formulas. -- PEZ

Well, you couldn't have noticed me much earlier; your reply came like 9 minutes after I posted my question! :-p --Dummy
